Arabia to Africa

Image
With little fuss our wait was brief to board the second flight and at 2am we took off to fly the horn of Africa down to Namibia, after a brief step outside to experience the midnight oven. Our plan was to sleep on this leg and that was also the official policy with the lights dimmed and interruptions from the air stewards kept to a minimum.  This time we didn't have a spare seat but were joined on the isle seat by a Namibian student returning from his studies in Russia. A trip he takes each term. He told us he was from a tribe in north west Namibia (most people in this sparsely populated country live along the fertile northern edge). He tells us how some people there still live a hunting and gathering lifestyle but others like his family now only live in cities.  Our time passes slowly and sleep is frequently broken by leg cramp after nine hours I was very ready to leave.

Doha

Our flight to Doha was definitely the easier of the two legs of our journey. Gatwick is quite an easy airport and despite arriving very early time passes quickly and we board our 787 Dreamliner with 100s of others. Fortunately the third seat in our section was empty so we were able to stretch and sit back watching from the huge choice of films. The staff were very friendly and have to say Qatar are a great budget long haul airline. The six hours to Doha passed quickly and we departed our plane to an oven. Outside it was midnight and 30 degrees. It felt like a blast furnace. But despite the long wait on the shuttle bus we were soon air conditioned. Inside it was a shopping palace. Everything was shiny, silver, gold, polished. Our ancestors would be impressed. The too hour wait wasn't a wait at all and almost as soon as we freshen up and find our gate, we're boarding for our flight to Windhoek.

We're off

Forty five minutes early at Watford Junction, trying to take it easy on our 24 hour journey. We land 10am Friday.
