Back of the queue
Katarina and I are at the back of the queue and I hold back until last to get some photos. Katarina starts the climb (if that's what you call it) - the walk maybe - without showing much nerves. We've seen a few go before us and it's certainly possible but also clearly hard work. Has anyone ever died doing this? How safe are these chains? These are not questions that enter my mind, thankfully, as I watch my daughter grab a chain.
There's a few stages on route. With a couple of points you can rest. Between these rests it's a case of swinging your body out to get a good grip with your feet to pull yourself along. I watch through the lens of my camera pretending it's just a casual stroll across the rocks. I try to think about it as little as possible. But Katarina makes her way steadily across. Being short, as we are, certainly doesn't help, but then again there's pros and cons to it all. The most important thing here is clearly just holding tight.
Eventually far enough along the canyon Doug reaches up and gives Katarina some support to reach the ground. It's over and my daughter hasn't killed herself. Now, I'm next. I pack my camera away, swing the backpack over my shoulder and begin the crossing.
