Bastion Tunnels

We started our second and last full day in Tallinn with a visit to the Bastion Tunnels a network of 17th century tunnels underneath a series of defensive earthworks that have been occupied by many over the years including the Swedish, who built them, the Russians who took them, the Tallinn residents who hid in them from the bombing Nazis, the Soviets who built nuclear bomb shelters, punks who hid from the Soviets and the homeless who moved on when communism collapsed. We were led by an English-speaking tour guide who presented the history very well and took us through a uniquely quirky attraction that probably said more about Estonia's national pride than it did about the history of Tallinn. It was very successful. I'll finish today's posts tomorrow on the bus to Riga as we returned to the hotel quite late this evening.
