Patarei prison
We eventually found the prison and paid 2 euros each to enter. I was also persuaded to buy a KGB pin. I just couldn't resist the appalling irony: although originally built as Barracks in the 19th century this was, in its last incarnation, was a Soviet prison, I assume for dissenters. It's been empty for over two decades, except it would seem by the homeless, from some evidence scattered around. In this picture are the walking yards. Inside it was in part pitch dark and we had to use our phones to avoid tripping on rubbish or falling down staircases. We had an option of a tour guide for 60 euros but declined like out people and just found our way among the rusting metals doors, peeling walls and piled of broken equipment. We couldn't get to all floors but we did find one room with a drain in the centre. It wasn't a shower so I was suspicious it had been an execution room.
