Basel Minster
We did the park and ride again leaving the car at the last town in France, Saint Louis, which borders Basel directly where in one street two neighbouring shops are in two countries. We took a tram into Basel and as ever our first stop was the Cathedral.
From the outside this one was unusual in being built from red sandstone creating a patchwork stone surface. It also lacks some of the obvious Gothic features of previous cathedrals. Basel Minster was built between the 11th and 16th centuries with an earlier Romanesque version collapsing on an earthquake. But you can still see inside the rounded Romanesque beside pointed Gothic style. Personally I love the clean more simple appearance. Less awe and more ahhh.
