Casemates de Bock

Built into the cliff is a series of passages and chambers, kilometres of them, that provided garrisons, bakeries and slaughterhouses. A huge network of tunnels underground and yet also above ground. A natural defence that was bombarded for centuries and always rebuilt. For us it was Luxembourg's second major attraction. For a few euros we are allowed to walk through part of the network of galleries some with canon placements others with barred opening overlooking the other half of Luxembourg City. Towards the end we came upon a very narrow spiral staircase that descended into dim light and ever more smooth and slippery steps. It was a little worrying as the descent continued seemingly without end. And then at the bottom a short passage before some more steps going straight back up. That was weird. Thrilling but weird. All the while the cool air brings a welcome break from the heat and sun outside. Here is also a well that descends into total darkness. Something bright is almost visible at the base.
