You can see either side what seems like two banners. They were in fact the screens on to which the subtitles are projected. But thankfully Katarina gave me a synopsis from what she found online. Unfortunately because we were so far back the noise from the lighting was a little disturbing but after a while we got into the story and enjoyed the spectacle, more to simply experience it than actually follow the opera perfectly.
