The greatest ruin of the western world
Being positioned on a huge hill over Athens meant the Acropolis would always be a target for any invaders. It was thanks largely to the Venetians in the 18th century, who blew up the Ottoman arms dump that was positioned here, that the Parthenon is in such a sorry state with much of the structure missing. It was this reason I'd out off visiting for many years. It's heartbreaking. And yet so much has still survived. And furthermore Greece clearly has enormous plans to restore much of what is there even if it might take decades. You can't walk within the structure but you can admire from outside.
