Scholarchio
We didn't hang around long at the hotel and left to find some food. We were already in the centre so outside, having never before seen Athens, I was taken aback by how close everything was. The streets are narrow, busy and alive with tourists and locals alike. There's very much a small town atmosphere but on a huge scale. We walked the streets for a while seeking a restaurant that wasn't too touristy until we stumbled on a very unusual family run restaurant. On the top floor, up a spiral staircase that the poor waiters had to climb with heavy trays, we were shown a massive tray of dishes from which we were to choose five. At first we thought it wouldn't be much but we were wrong. It's a rarity for me but I couldn't finish it. Our selection included a salad, calamari, deep fried aubergine, taramasalata and meatballs. Together with wine, ouzo and bread. Oh and a dessert. With the slight logistical problem of the staircase, service was slow but it was all worth it. A great authentic experience.
