Roman Theatre
We then moved on to the Roman Theatre. This was the only site still open to the air, although still below street level. It was actually falling into disrepair long before the Romans left completely but was then filled in as a rubbish pit and then built over, after using the stones to build fortification, by successive generations of Muslims and even Jews. There was included a large exhibit about the Jewish population that was here up until the expulsion and forced conversions. It was all so well presented and demonstrated enormous respect for the city's past. I've added three photos to show firstly the lower stalls that now remain but then an existing entrance arch that was the most exciting exhibit. The whole theatre complex would have huge and the model gives some idea of the scale given the lowers stalls were just a tiny part.
