Fence building
After the long ride in the carts and the long slow ride back we're very late for the afternoon's work so have to wash and rush to jump back into another vehicle to get out to another session with the fence. This time, the third part of the fence recycling: fence removal, wire braiding and now fence building.
First we must pull down the existing wire and we've brought with us the wire we've been braiding for days. We stretch this out the hundreds of metres and then using a tensing tool at the end that pull the long cables so tight you can't flex them at all. It's quite a scary tool given the forces that must be involved. But we've done well and completed stage three. We've done our bit for conservation. These new fences have just a single strand, which allows animals to cross without becoming entangled but still stop tourists from driving off the path to camp or just for adventure and so disturb the ecosystem. This is the fence we've replaced.
