Bare foot and ankle deep
OK not so bare since some of us have kept our socks on. We were advised not to wear shoes so as we leave the car we also leave behind our footwear and walk a little uncomfortably over the sandy, stony ground a few hundred meters before the sand dunes begin. It's not yet 9am so the sand is still quite cool. As we begin our ascent the soft sand is quite soothing, a novelty still. And we all share the same route. There is one path up the sand dunes to the tallest point, Big Daddy. Among us here are seasoned travellers with their backpack water supplies and then families with small children. From the base at least, everyone is enjoying the stunning scenery together. And 'stunning' is appropriate; it feels like someone has whacked you across the face with a beautiful poster.
