Spotting stripes
We have one simple task. Spot animals. But it's not a question of identifying some animal trotting beside the truck or a massive herd filling the landscape. No, out here it's rock. And then more rock. That's it. Except somewhere in among the rock, maybe after 10 minutes, someone shouts out they see something. Everyone gazes in the same direction and tries to identify if that speck about 500-1000 metres away is a tree or maybe an ostrich or a zebra. I see little compared to the others but just keep quiet pretending I see what they see. Even with my camera lens on full zoom (440mm) these zebra hardly stand out. Imagine now if these zebra are 1km away half way up a mountain and you're in a moving vehicle. Counting game is far from easy. Of course, Occasionally you might see a warthog a little closer. If you're looking.
