Dead tree
We were given four cameras on the way out, perhaps a little generous given how few they have. However, while these cost a few hundred each, a GPS tracking collar costs maybe $4,000 and so there is a trade off. Crucially, camera traps offer far less risk. If a baboon runs off with one, your loss is small. And so we find our second spot with animals tracks from three directions (including zebra, hyena and baboon). Each location has a name and this we call Dead Tree having picked two dead trees to hold our traps. The one on the left was very secure. The one on the right took a little more work and finally held together with a loose branch. The position looks good but I leave concerned a baboon could easily see it and loosen the straps. Our job is done and four traps are set.
