Clean bones and camera traps
This morning we are heading out to a neighbour's farm. Doug has his eyes on a puppy from a new litter. But a neighbour round here is not a simple step outside your front door. It's a 20km drive. On the way we check on some camera traps, replacing memory cards and batteries. In order to get the support of neighbouring farms in the protection of wildlife, the conservationists plant camera traps to help prove either way whether the carnivores are responsible for any losses. Most of the time the cameras can prove it's not the endangered carnivores, but even if it is, engaging with the farmers helps to better hande the situation. On route we find plenty of clean evidence that carnivores have been here. But this is nothing to worry the farmers as the prey here is wildlife and not livestock.
