Free tour
At 11am and 6pm every day some volunteers offer free guided tours around the most interesting section of central Sofia. We weren't interested and we're too late anyway but we did see one in action. Nevertheless I'd already printed out their route at home so we just followed it ourselves to catch the various buildings from government ministries to universities and old churches. Unfortunately it meant we missed the commentary and so I can't give you the significant histories but we can read that another time. We've come here to see it with our own eyes. And Sofia is certainly very impressive. It's not quite the scale of Budapest but it's very large in any case and bigger than any of the Balkan capitals we visited. The architecture definitely looks distinct from central Europe and you definitely get the feeling you've travelled further east. And it's mostly very clean, unlike Belgrade.
