Sofia subway

In order to cross the road at one point we used the metro underpass. I was shocked at the grandeur and cleanliness of the platform. Subways seem to be quite significant architectural structures in the former communist countries. Why was that? The London underground is quite functional and Paris was a bit of a dump. Perhaps it's a statement you can't escape the regime even underground.
