Stairway to Heaven

Next came the primary purpose of our visit to Kotor and Montenegro, to climb the steps of the old wall to the top of the mountain that overlooks the city. We'd stayed overnight simply because the buses between these two nations are not well planned and you can't do a visit in one day except with a tourist company and then you don't get time to do the steps. We paid our 3 euros each and began the ascent. The clouds were still present providing some shade from the sun but it cleared frequently enough to make the climb harder. We were sweating after only a couple of minutes. There were about 1,500 steps (I forget the exact number) and these were not small and often separated by gravelly parts. In fact the whole way was loose underfoot and many warning signs lined th route. It went on and on and on. And we both had a hard time dripping with sweat and made worse by Katarina's discovery of a load of mosquito bites around one ankle rubbing against her scandals. Halfway up we were ready to be hospitalised.
